At once introspective and fantastical, Angel’s Stride is a reflection on the personal through the playful. The pieces draw on artist Miriam Vega’s childhood memories of stylized works like Unico in the Island of Magic and Dance Dance Revolution to mediate adult emotions and experiences through the dreamy and oblique lens of nostalgia. Diary-like in nature, the paintings and drawings expose for the viewer the comforting solitude of imagined childhood worlds as a protected and protective space, free from self-conscious criticism. Just as angels are neither good nor evil, the work does not pass judgment on the artist or her subjects; instead it offers an alternate place to simply be true to one’s self.
